2015 Season - Week 17

Champion for the Fourth time/BUMS celebrate new Champion

The closest and most exciting finish in the 21 year history of the Papas Fritas Trophy happened on Sunday night. The five BUMS gathered at HQ on Monday night can testify to the tension in the atmosphere. It was simply the greatest game in BUMS history. Chief started the day 15 points ahead of Ron but got nothing from his four players in the early slate of games. In the fourth quarter of the early games Ron took a three point lead from Josh Brown’s 12 points and a Calvin Johnson TD. Graham Gano’s PAT with 12 mins left in the second quarter of the second slate of games finally got Chief “off the schnide” and a Gano field goal three minutes later gave Chief a two point advantage. Gano extended that to five points before a Derek Carr TD pass with just two mins left closed the gap back to two points and when the Panthers won Ron took a four point lead but all his players had now played. Chief could have won the Papas Fritas in overtime in the last of the second games to finish as he had the Rams head coach, but the Rams game-winning 48 yard field goal with 4:49 left in overtime was blocked. So our Champion came down to the regular season’s final game as Chief, four points behind Ron, had his QB Aaron Rodgers hosting Minnesota in the game to decide the NFC North. Rodgers had a dreadful first three quarters with only one drive into the red zone where one pass fell incomplete in the end zone and Green Bay settled for a field goal. Two minutes into the fourth quarter Aaron hit Richard Rodgers on a 16 yard TD pass and Chief pulled to within a point of Ron. Green Bay got the ball back with 10 minutes left and drove into the red zone with a 3rd and 3 on the Minnesota 18 but Rodgers was sacked and the Packers settled for another field goal and trailed 20-13 with 5:35 left. Minnesota returned the kick-off 70 yards but fumbled and Green Bay got the ball back on their own 23 with 5:21 left. Three big completions set Rodgers up with a first and goal at the ten but after three pass attempts with 2:18 to go Rodgers threw into the end zone on fourth down was intercepted by Xavier Rhodes. That wasn’t the final chance however as the Packer D got a three and out and by using their time outs Rodgers got the ball back on his 42 yard line with 58 seconds left. He drove the Packers to the Vikings 39 yard line and as time expired in the final game of the 2015 regular season hurled a pass to the end zone one last time but the ball was knocked to the ground, Minnesota won the NFC North and Ron won the Papas Fritas Trophy 2016. Congratulations to Ron who becomes the 12th champion in our 21 years of existence after a tremendous final day battle that saw 4 lead changes. Incredibly after Ron took the lead Chief had 13 opportunities to win the Premiership (the St Louis FG in overtime and then twelve Rodgers pass attempts to the end zone or in the red zone) Going Down There were no such dramas at the bottom of the Premiership where injury plagued seasons doomed AP and George a few weeks ago. Daz started the day 12 points behind Craig and the closest the gap ever got was nine points in the 3rd quarter of the second games courtesy of Daz’s kicker Stephen Hauschka. In the end the Leamington Spartans finished 19 points ahead of The Underachieving Bastards and Daz returns to the Conference.
